Sunday Confessions: Guilty Pleasures

Happy, happy Sunday.

Today is a favorite day of mine. It is the Academy Awards. I faithfully watch them EVERY single year. It is one of my guilty pleasures.

I enjoy watching the stars walk down the red carpet, seeing what they are wearing, analyzing the trends, gawking at the beautiful jewels, and saying "bless her heart" when I see someone wearing something hideous. Oh, and I am slightly interested in who and what wins.

Today's question is: What is your guilty pleasure(s)? Or if you don't want to answer that feel free to confess anything that is on your mind.

For Christmas last year my sister and I got our mom a recipe box for all her stray pieces of paper here and there with our family favorites recipes. We got this one from Container Store.

While we were visiting for Christmas we gathered up all of her recipes and wrote them out on fun cards. Then we put them in a protective sleeve. This is key because you know how those cards get all kinds of stuff on them.

I loved this recipe box and idea so much I went out and bought myself one. Slowly, ever so slowly, I am gathering and writing all my recipes down in one place. The only problem is that I didn't want to use the generic cards BLAH cards and the ones we used for my moms, well I can't find them any more.

So today, I came across this great idea from Jackie Hernandez at Crafting a Green World. You can print recipe cards onto used brown paper bags. They look great and you might just helping the earth out too. Click here for a tutorial and a free PDF file to download. LOVE IT!

Tried and True Tuesday: A recipe

This is a common dinner at our house. I tend to always keep the ingredients for this in my pantry because we like it a lot. It is quick and easy and oh so yummy. I don't measure anything. I just throw it all together. A little bit of this or a little bit of that. I use what I have and leave out what I don't.

Fast and Easy Chinese Chicken Salad

bag of green lettuce
can of mandarin oranges
can of water chestnuts
handful of sliced almonds
chopped green onion (I don't always have this but use it if I do)
cooked chicken (I buy the already cooked rotisserie in the deli section- I get make a lot of meals from this because of how easy it is. It is all about saving time when you are a busy work from home mom!)
asian sesame salad dressing

Mix it all together and add chow mien crunchy noodles to the top before serving.

Sweet Papery had a banner year in 2008! Thank you to our "sweet" customer who have been so supportive and patient as we have experienced growing pains. This 2008 holiday season we shipped well over 800 stamps!

A well needed break was taken during the holidays while we were closed. Back in the studio, refreshed, renewed and ready to get down to business, we have been working on new designs, putting together new products and collaborating with some fabulous artists! Our website is almost finished too. We hope to open on January 12th (not all products will be listed but a good portion of them will be)!

Wow! It has been a long time since I have blogged. Things have been crazy busy around here as usual.

I will have some cool updates for you later this week, but I wanted to share this exciting news. Jennifer McGuire made mention of one of my little stamps on her blog. Jennifer is an amazing scrapbooker, designer and author. She designs stamps for Hero Arts, is a Garden Girl for Two Peas in a Bucket, wrote this book, is a designer for Autumn Leaves, and so much more.

Sweet Papery will be closed for Spring Break. We will be soaking up the sun on a lovely beach somewhere in Mexico. Far away from a computer and the phone. Unfortunately that will only be happening in my dreams.

The truth: We are taking a short break to make some changes and updates to our store (and to spend time with our family), but the most exciting thing we will be doing is getting ready to launch a brand new product line. I am always on etsy. Always. The reason of course is because of my store there, but while I am relisting items, answering people's questions, sending proofs, I am also browsing my customer's stores and checking out who they have marked as a favorite. This is bad for someone who likes to shop. Here are three things I bought yesterday:

I have been wanting a carton of eggs from her for months now and when I saw she added these sweet blue eggs I knew I had to get them.

Aren't these vintage letterpress F's super cool? I am going to display them in my office/shipping room. Check out Angiepea's shop for lots more. I really like this Frida one.

I bought this print to hang in my office from a lovely gal in New Zealand. Check out Bernadette's store sugarloop for other cool prints.

There were a few more things I bought, but I can't show you because they are gifts for people who just might read this blog! Also, in case you can't tell, my new year's resolution didn't last for very long.

I made my first appearance in a real life publication! My rubber stamps are featured in the new issue of VenusZine as a source for DYI businesses. WAHOO!

It was so fun to get my comp issue and flip through it until, lo and behold there were my stamps. I hope this means more exposure for my growing business. These are very exciting times.

Apart from the competition

As a small business owner, I am constantly trying to find ways to set myself apart from my competition. I want people to buy from me and I have to give them a reason why I am better than the cheaper alternative or the bigger store.

I came across this website someone had posted on their blog. I was immediately touched by the story and I love this idea.

What are some things you can do get customers lining up to buy from you over and over again? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Here are some things I came up with:

Hold special invitation only events -- these can even be online sneak previews.
Send personalized thank you cards. I bought the cutest felt food from BeckyM on etsy and I got a handmade card with my order. It made me feel really special.
Send a card to customers on their birthday with a special offer just for them
Offer a frequent buyer program. For example, if a customer buys x number of products from you they receive a $15 store credit.
Send out personalized newsletters with exclusive discounts. I use Constant Contact to stay in touch with my customers. They have easy to use, professional template designs. I let my newsletter subscribers be the first to know of new products and I give them exclusive discounts that I don't offer any where else. In fact, yesterday I had a leap year sale and only announced it in my newsletter. Do you know how many sales I got? SIXTY-NINE! That is over a 500% increase of my average day of sales. I like all of our packaging to be have the same style and quality that our customers have come to know and appreciate in our products. That is why I am pleased to debut the new packaging for our set of 25 customized pencils.

Passing of my father

Up and blogging

I have had a personal blog for some time now and finally took the plunge and set up my business blog.

So Welcome! I plan to use this blog to show off my new products, let you in on a little bit of my creative process, share amazing creative finds and whatever else you tell me you want.

I used to envy people I saw at the post office who were shipping lots of boxes that looked like some type of products. I always wondered what it was they were shipping, who was buying their products, did they own their own business, etc.

I wanted to have my own business. I wanted to be at the post office shipping off products people were buying from me. And now, look I am that person.

I am still amazed at every sale I get. I can't believe I ship off atleast 20 boxes a week. I love going to the post office. It means I have been busy. It means people like my products. I love that I get at least one international order a week. I have shipped to the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Finland, Germany, and many more.

This is fun!
